Wisdom Teeth Removal in Placerville

True Oral, Facial & Dental Implant Surgery has three offices conveniently located in California. We regularly perform safe and comfortable wisdom tooth extractions in El Dorado Hills, Placerville, and Irvine, CA, where you can expect outstanding treatment from a team of highly skilled oral surgery professionals.

The average mouth only has room for 28 adult teeth. It can be problematic when an additional set of molars, or wisdom teeth, try to squeeze in. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons recommend having wisdom teeth extracted as soon as possible before any issues arise, like pain, dental shifting, or infection.

Some people develop more or less than four wisdom teeth, while others never develop any. At your regular dental visits, your dentist will check for wisdom teeth and refer you to an oral surgeon when it’s time to have them removed. Dr. Jason Straw safely and comfortably extracts wisdom teeth with IV sedation, which allows you to rest during the procedure without feeling discomfort.

What Are Impacted Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth are large molars that are unnecessary because you already have molars that chew food. It’s rare for a wisdom tooth to develop without causing any issues. Wisdom teeth roots are unpredictable and can grow into the roots of other teeth or facial nerves, which can be very painful. When a wisdom tooth tries to erupt through the gums, it can push nearby teeth out of position.

A wisdom tooth may fully erupt, partially erupt, or remain fully trapped beneath the gums. When a tooth is blocked from eruption, it is considered to be impacted. An impacted wisdom tooth will not naturally erupt on its own and must be surgically removed. The most common teeth to become impacted are canine teeth and wisdom teeth. Canine teeth, however, are crucial for a healthy bite and every effort is made to save them, whereas wisdom teeth are simply extracted.

Symptoms of Wisdom Teeth

If you notice any of these signs or symptoms, you may need to have your wisdom teeth extracted:

  • Tender or swollen gums
  • Gums that easily bleed
  • Pain or swelling in the back of the mouth
  • Chronic bad breath, which could indicate an infection
  • Visibly seeing a wisdom tooth poking through the gums
  • An unpleasant taste in your mouth
  • Difficulty fully opening your mouth

If you experience one or more of these symptoms, we invite you to contact our office in Irvine, CA, for a consultation with Dr. Straw.

Bank Stem Cells From Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth naturally contain many stem cells, which can be harvested and stored in a lab for future use. Stem cells can potentially be used in regenerative medicine and therapies to treat illnesses or trauma. True Oral, Facial & Dental Implant Surgery proudly offers the opportunity to bank stem cells through Stemodontics®, the leading stem cell banking service.

Stem cells can be collected from the pulp of your wisdom teeth and stored in a state-of-the-art laboratory.

Wisdom Tooth Removal Surgery

When you meet with Dr. Jason Straw at your first visit, he will examine your oral health and create a personalized treatment plan to remove your wisdom teeth. We will take 3D scans of your mouth and discuss your anesthesia options, although this surgery is most often performed using IV sedation. Local anesthesia may be used for simple tooth extractions.

On the day of surgery, we will administer the anesthesia and wait for it to take effect. Dr. Straw will extract any erupted wisdom teeth using forceps. To extract impacted teeth, he will make an incision in the gum tissue and then remove them. Sutures will be placed as needed and you will rest in our office until the anesthesia wears off.

When undergoing IV sedation, you must arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home after surgery and remain with you for 24 hours. After surgery, you can expect to rest for the remainder of the day. We provide post-operative instructions which contain important information on which foods to eat and how to manage swelling.

Be sure to keep the extraction sites clean with warm salt water rinses. Do not use a straw for one week, as the suction could dislodge the blood clot within the tooth socket. This causes a painful condition known as dry socket.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to get your wisdom teeth removed?

It will depend on how many teeth you need removed, the complexity of surgery, the anesthesia used, and your dental insurance. We will provide you with a cost estimate during the consultation.

Should I get 2 or 4 wisdom teeth removed?

Even if some wisdom teeth do not appear to be causing concern, you should have all wisdom teeth extracted at the same time. This prevents the need for additional surgery down the road. By having third molars extracted, you can prevent future complications from having the chance to arise.

What happens if you wait too long to get wisdom teeth out?

As wisdom teeth fully develop, they become more embedded into the jaw bone. Their roots may grow in the direction of other roots or nerves, possibly striking them. The alignment of your teeth may shift, which can lead to bite problems. Impacted wisdom teeth are difficult to clean around, which can lead to infections and the formation of cysts or tumors.

Is wisdom tooth extraction painful?

Our team makes sure you are comfortable during any oral and maxillofacial surgery procedure. IV sedation will render you into a semi-conscious state and you will be unable to feel pain. Most patients have no memory of the surgery once it’s over. In rare cases, general anesthesia may be recommended.

After surgery, some discomfort is expected as you heal. Swelling peaks around the third day, but this can be managed with ice packs or over-the-counter pain medication. Sometimes a local anesthetic is used in addition to IV sedation to provide additional comfort following surgery.
